LONDON (AP): England survived a nervous period to extend its lead over Australia to 340 runs Saturday by reaching 130-2 at tea on the third day of the second Ashes test.

England strengthened its position with Kevin Pietersen 28 not out and Ravi Bopara unbeaten on 19 after captain Andrew Strauss opted not to enforce the follow-on before lunch, when Australia was dismissed for 215.

Bopara was almost caught in the over before tea after pulling Mitchell Johnson to Nathan Hauritz at mid-on. Bopara stood his ground and the third umpire ruled ``not out'' following inconclusive TV replays.

Australia, seeking to retain the Ashes, came out in fighting mood after the break and removed the England openers in the second and fourth overs following the interval, bowled by offspinner Hauritz.

Alastair Cook went back to a ball he should have been forward to and was lbw to Hauritz for 32, his lunch-time score. Then Strauss, who made 161 in England's first innings of 425, edged a turning ball to Michael Clarke at slip for the same score.

England might have crashed from 61-0 to 88-4 if Australia had then taken its chances.

Pietersen survived an lbw appeal on 10 to Ben Hilfenhaus. As Pietersen looked anxiously toward the umpire, he wandered down the pitch and Ricky Ponting tried to run him out from slip, but missed the stumps. He would have been out by three feet.

Three balls later, Bopara on 9 edged a probing delivery from Peter Siddle on off stump to Ponting at second slip, which he dropped at shin height. It was a painful time for Ponting as the drop was replayed on the big screen several times.

The tension continued when a nervous Pietersen on 11 tried to drive Hilfenhaus through cover and managed a fortuitous inside edge for four to fine leg. He repeated the shot when on 23, for a single.

Earlier, Australia's tail-end batsmen almost reached the follow-on target of 226 through Siddle (35) and Hauritz (24), who combined in a ninth-wicket stand of 44.

England is seeking its first victory over Australia at Lord's since 1934.

Nagpur, Jul 18 (PTI) Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar today paid rich tributes to his mentor Cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar and said he could attain such heights because of the 'sir'.

Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli, Praveen Amre and Sameer Dighe along with Achrekar were felicitated at a function here as 'Guru-Shishya' (mentor and his protege) by a local arts and cultural academy, was presided by BCCI President Shashank Manohar.

Tendulkar recalled an incident when his coach told him to play for 'B' team of his School. Instead of batting, he preferred sitting in the gallery and cheering his schoolmates.

In the evening, when he came across Achrekar, he was asked how many runs he had scored. Taken aback, Tendulkar told him that he was clapping and cheering up. Then came a slap which shattered his myth. His lunch box fell on the ground and he realised what mistake he had commited, he said.

‘India serious about climate change issues’

NEW DELHI, 17 JULY: Mr Shyam Saran, Special Envoy to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, feels those who think India is not serious about the issue of climate change are “completely off the mark”.
Delivering a lecture organised by OneWorld India Foundation which held a day-long consultative dialogue on “India’s Climate Responsive Roadmap for Development” here yesterday, Mr Saran underlined the fact that India had already been doing a great deal on the issue of climate change. He also pointed out that economic and social development and poverty reduction had to be taken into account as they were also overriding priorities for the country.
The purpose of yesterday’s dialogue was to build a multi-stakeholder dialogue among members of civil society, business, academia, media and government, “for a conscientious approach to India’s climate responsive roadmap”, said Mr Naimur Rahman, director of OneWorld Foundation India. He said it was also to pressure the government to adopt a more people-centric approach in dealing with the challenges of climate change, both at the national level and at international negotiations. Mr Saran talked about the government’s efforts in bringing about a gradual shift from reliance on fossil fuel to renewable sources of energy. ;SNS

India's first woman photographer waiting for Nano

VADODARA: Ms Homai Vyarawalla, first woman photographer of the country is eagerly awaiting for delivery of Ratan Tata's small car 'Nano' after she was promised delivery of the car within two months.

The company had offered her to deliver Nano within two months on priority basis after accepting deposits from her about two months ago, the 96-year-old Ms Vyarawalla, told PTI.

“I am yet to hear anything from the company as to when this car will be delivered,” she said. “I was surprised when the Tata car dealer knocked my house about two months ago and conveyed the company's decision of allotting the car to me on a priority bas is,” she said.

Even the Central Bank official visited her and she deposited Rs 95,000, she said and added that, the bank assured of arranging the remaining funds by them, Ms Vyarawalla said.

She disposed of her 55-year-old Fiat car imported from Italy to a relative hailing from Mumbai, the ace photographer of yesteryear said. - PTI

Lucknow July 18 (PTI) A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi dubbed her government as "non-operational", Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today hit back accusing the UPA government of being responsible for the state's dismal power scenario and released a "white paper" on the issue.

Answering Rahul's dig at installation of statues and memorials by her government, she claimed the money spent for them had not affected development work and the expenditure for these constructions was just a "fraction" of what was spent for Raj Ghat, memorial for Mahatma Gandhi, in Delhi.

On the charge of lack of development specially those levelled by Rahul Gandhi, Mayawati told reporters here that she has asked her officials to send a copy of a booklet containing details of development works undertaken by her govenment to all Congress MP's and MLA's starting from "the prince of Congress".

JAKARTA, July 18 (Reuters) - Investigators were sifting through two bomb-damaged luxury Indonesian hotels on Saturday, for clues to those behind suicide attacks that shattered four years of stability in the world's most populous Muslim nation.

Although officials could not say who they believed was responsible for Friday's attacks, suspicion is pointing towards Jemaah Islamiah (JI), the radical militant Islamist group responsible for a string of deadly attacks that seemed to end in 2005.

"It has the signature of our 'friends'," said a retired Southeast Asian police officer now focused on counter-terrorism in the region.

The bombers struck the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton, luxury hotels popular with businessmen and diplomats and considered to be among the most secure buildings in the capital.

Police told a press conference on Saturday evening nine people were killed and 53 injured in the blasts, revising a previous death toll after investigators had found it difficult to identify some victims from the remains.

"Of the dead, we believe that three we haven't yet identified include the suicide bombers," Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda told a news briefing earlier in the day.

The casualties included citizens of Indonesia, the United States, Australia, South Korea, the Netherlands, Italy, Britain, Canada, Norway, Japan and India.

The blasts are a severe blow for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who was re-elected earlier this month in a landslide victory on the back of strong growth in Southeast Asia's biggest economy.

STRING OF ATTACKS

After being rocked by a string of attacks against Westerners in the first part of the decade, Indonesia has been widely credited with successfully tackling militant groups -- including the executions last year of the bombers responsible for killing 202 people in Bali in 2002.

Radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, who was alleged to have once headed JI, said the bombs were "a warning from God to Indonesia for not respecting God's law."

"Those who were involved were infidels or apostates, who wanted to impede the jihad in Indonesia," he added in a telephone text message to Reuters.

Questions will now be asked how supposedly tight security was so easily by-passed.

Police said the bombers had checked into the Marriott as paying guests on Wednesday and had assembled the bombs in their room. A third bomb was found and defused in a laptop computer bag on the 18th floor.

A police spokesman told reporters a metal detector had beeped when a bomb hidden inside a laptop bag passed through the scanner, but the bomber had said it was a laptop and the security guards had let him go through.

"Even as Indonesians are given due credit for all they have done preventing an attack for four years, they should also carefully examine what went wrong with security measures and seek a better understanding of the domestic network that supports terrorism," said the Heritage Foundation's Walter Lohman.

International reaction to the bombings has been swift.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who spent four years living in Jakarta as a child after his mother married an Indonesian, called the attacks "outrageous".

"These attacks make it clear that extremists remain committed to murdering innocent men, women and children of any faith in all countries," the White House said in a statement.

Lohman said he was confident Indonesia could bounce back from the latest tragedy.

Hillary for deepening strategic ties with India

Mumbai (IANS): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Saturday expressed a desire to strengthen strategic ties with India as she began a five-day trip by pressing Pakistan to take action against terrorists who attacked Mumbai, including the luxury hotel where she is staying.

Dressed in an elegant red business suit, Ms. Clinton captivated innumerable hearts as she spent a hectic day meeting corporate leaders, victims of the November 2008 terror attack, women activists, journalists besides teachers and students of a leading college.

Ms. Clinton, who arrived on Friday night amid rains, declared that the US was "entering (an era of) a new and even more promising relations with India" and that her country wanted to "broaden and deepen our relationship".

On Defence pact

She said she was optimistic about concluding a defence pact to enable Washington to monitor the end use of arms and sensitive technologies sold to India to ensure that they are not diverted to other countries.

"We are working very hard to finalise a number of agreements. I am optimistic we will get such agreements resolved and announced," she said, when asked about the status of the arms 'end-user monitoring' pact.

The end-user verification agreement is likely to be signed between the two sides after Ms. Clinton meets External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna in New Delhi Monday.

A technology safeguards agreement on space launches and another pact on deepening educational ties are also expected to be signed during Ms. Clinton's visit. India is likely to announce two sites for US nuclear reactors.

On her fourth visit to India, Ms. Clinton began the day by paying homage to the over 170 people killed and those wounded when terrorists from Pakistan attacked several landmarks in Mumbai last year. One of them was the Taj Palace and Tower Hotel where Ms. Clinton is now a guest.

She met some of the survivors of the savagery at the Taj hotel and then described terrorism as "ruthless and nihilistic". The Taj was badly damaged in the firefight between the terrorists and commandos.

She was given a tour of the now renovated Taj hotel by Karimbir Kang, its general manager whose wife and two children were among those slain by the terrorists who went from room to room shooting and hurling grenades.

She said she was deeply touched to meet the staff of the Taj and the nearby Oberoi-Trident Hotel who faced the brunt of the terrorists, nine of whom were killed by commandos after about 60 hours.

Referring to Friday's bombings in Jakarta, Ms. Clinton said it was a "painful reminder (that terrorism) is global, it is ruthless, it is nihilistic, and it must be stopped".

Responding to a question that Pakistan was not doing enough against terrorists pitted against India, Ms. Clinton underlined that Islamabad needed to "root out" such outfits.

"We believe they have to be rooted out, they must be defeated, they must be dismantled. We say that clearly, we will continue to do so."

She said "It is imperative for Pakistan to go after all terrorist groups. Even if they were focussed elsewhere, they are now part of a common criminal syndicate."

She said the US had no role to play in a resolution of the decades-old India-Pakistan dispute over Kashmir and denied her country was forcing the two countries to go for negotiations.

Ms. Clinton met select Indian business leaders on issues like energy security, agriculture, global financial crisis and climate change. She said she had "exciting and fruitful" discussions.

The meeting was organised by Tata group chairman Ratan Naval Tata. Also present were Reliance group's Mukesh Ambani, ICICI Bank's Chanda Kochhar, Nicholas Piramal's Swati Piramal, Godrej group's Adi Godrej and Mahindra and Mahindra's Anand Mahindra.

"We have entered into new and promising era of cooperation between our two countries," said Ms. Clinton during a brief interaction with the media later.

Climate change

On climate change, she said there was no contradiction between poverty eradication and moving towards a low-carbon economy. "We acknowledge we've made mistakes and we, with other developed countries, are responsible" for global warming.

"We are hoping that a great country like India will not make the same mistakes."

After lunch, Ms. Clinton renewed her association with the artisans of the Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA), a group she first came into contact with 14 years ago when she was America's first lady.

She also spent an hour with Bollywood icon Aamir Khan at the St. Xavier's College discussing with students and teachers an issue close to her heart -- spreading education.

Ms. Clinton will on Sunday fly to New Delhi where she will meet top leaders for talks on issues including economic growth, climate change, education, health care, non-proliferation and counter-terrorism.

GENEVA (AFP) — Police divers have ended the reign of terror of a huge fish that was attacking swimmers in a Swiss lake.

The zander, which was 70 centimetres (two feet three inches) long and weighed eight kilos (17.5 pounds), was harpooned on Sunday after it bit six swimmers over the weekend, fish warden Fabio Croci told local media.

Two swimmers were treated in hospital for bite wounds up to 10 centimetres (four inches) long after being attacked on Lac Majeur, which borders Italy, he added.

Police divers at first tried to capture the carnivorous fish with a net, but when this failed they pursued the zander with a harpoon and managed to kill it.

The meat from the captured fish was served up to tourists at the lake.

"It is quite unusual for zanders to bite humans", Croci said, adding he suspected the fish was suffering from a hormonal imbalance which could be responsible for its aggression.

Celebrity biographer Ian Halperin set out to take down Michael Jackson in his just-released unauthorized look at the late singer's life, "Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson." Instead, Halperin said he ended up writing a sympathetic look at a sad world inhabited by the King of Pop, in which he said Jackson was plagued by anorexia, crippling financial problems, a deadly lung disease, a torrid addiction to prescription medication, fears of mortality and, in his final months, a crippling anxiety that he could not pull off the proposed 50-date residency at the O2 arena in London, which would have kicked off Monday.

In light of Jackson's death, Halperin had to scramble over the past few weeks to update the book, which was originally slated for release July 7, the day the world paid tribute to Jackson at a memorial at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

According to the author, those around Jackson feared the singer was not strong enough to complete the This Is It residency but forged ahead anyway, even after the 50-year-old performer reportedly collapsed during his second rehearsal for the shows due to unexplained causes.

"He was ill," Halperin told MTV News. "They were forcing him and urging him to come back with this O2 residency tour instead of really being by his side and getting proper attention, which is the saddest thing about his life."

The Canadian journalist is best known for a series of unauthorized celebrity biographies including "Who Killed Kurt Cobain? The Mysterious Death of an Icon," "Bad and Beautiful: Inside the Dazzling and Deadly World of Supermodels" and "Celine Dion: Behind the Fairytale - A Very, Very Unauthorized Biography." He's also behind the 2008 documentary "His Highness Hollywood," in which he went undercover as a gay actor to infiltrate the Hollywood audition process and the Church of Scientology. He writes in the Jackson book that the singer shed a startling amount of weight in the lead-up to the London shows, hardly eating any meals and leading his medical team to worry that he was developing anorexia. One unnamed staffer pegged the singer's recent weight at around 100 pounds, a very low figure for a man of his height, 5-foot-10.

"I disclosed that he was anorexic before he died, and one of the most serious side effects of anorexia is cardiac arrest," Halperin said, pointing to the coroner's report that cited cardiac arrest as a contributing factor to Jackson's death.

One of the most outrageous claims in the book — the first and quickest to hit shelves in the wake of Jackson's shocking death on June 25 — allegedly comes from one of Jackson's closest friends. The unnamed friend said that a month before Jackson died, he told his 11-year-old daughter, Paris, that he feared he only had weeks to live.

"He called her into his room and told her not to get mad at him if he didn't make it to Father's Day," the friend said, according to Halperin's book. "He had a premonition that his days were numbered. He felt extremely ill. Unfortunately, no one wanted to help him. His closest advisers tried to control him with medication, drugs and false hopes. They wanted to make sure he didn't bail on the O2 gigs and that they would not be paid the money Jackson owed them."

Halperin adamantly defended his use of anonymous sources by saying that everyone around Jackson — doctors, lawyers, friends and lovers — are made to sign confidentiality agreements.

According to this friend, in Jackson's final months, the pop star spent hours, sometimes days, in his room writing extensively. "I asked him if he was writing a novel. He replied, 'Just some thoughts on my journey on this earth. I want to leave something to my children,' " the friend recalled. Hearing that, the friend feared that Jackson — described as erratic and depressed during his final few weeks — could be suicidal.

After producers of the London shows pushed them back due to what they claimed were production issues, Jackson's mental and physical health continued to deteriorate, according to the book, with the singer getting increasingly "terrified" about the prospect of performing the gigs.

"He wasn't eating, he wasn't sleeping and when he did sleep, he had nightmares that he was going to be murdered," an unnamed source claims in the book. "He was deeply worried that he was going to disappoint his fans. He even said something that made me briefly think he was suicidal. He said he was worried that he was going to end up like Elvis [a comparison Lisa Marie Presley, Jackson's ex-wife and Elvis' daughter, made shortly after Jackson's death]. He was always comparing himself to Elvis as long as I knew him, but there was something in his tone that made me think that he wanted to die, he was tired of life. He gave up."

Though no one in the book claims to have seen Jackson use illegal drugs, several sources described his alleged longtime addiction to prescription pills. Halperin claims that after a 2003 "60 Minutes" interview, Jackson overdosed on prescription pills and had to be revived by a doctor.

In December, Halperin claimed Jackson was suffering from a genetic lung condition called Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and that the singer would be dead within six months; Jackson died six months and one day later. The biographer once posed as a hairdresser in order to meet Jackson, for what was originally planned as a documentary on the singer. He said sources close to Jackson told him the singer was gravely ill and suffering from the lung disease but that Jackson's circle of advisers tried to quash Halperin's claims to keep the O2 dates on track.

Halperin said he originally set out to paint an unflattering portrait of Jackson, feeling that the singer had unfairly been acquitted on child-molestation charges in 2005, charges Halperin now believes were not true. "I set out to nail him after his acquittal. ... I was livid," Halperin said. "But I dug up a 1993 official court document that says Michael Jackson was forced [in a 1993 molestation allegation that ended in a settlement] by his insurance company to settle."

Again with no named sources who agreed to speak for attribution, among the other big bombshell claims in the book is Halperin's insistence that Jackson was a gay man. That revelation is based, Halperin said, on confirmation from some of the singer's alleged gay lovers, as well as footage of Jackson dressed as a woman. "I have photos of him disguised as a woman going to those meetings [with his lovers]," said Halperin, noting that the photos and other alleged proof of Jackson's sexuality will be included in the film, due next year, for which he claims to have shot 300 hours of footage.

A spokesperson for the Jackson family has not returned MTV News' repeated requests for comment.

Ian Halperin is such a meaningless person, that everytime I want to comment on him I have to look his name up again. By saying Michael Jackson was greedy he is just projecting his own greed onto Jackson. The fact that he might have film material and pictures that show Michael Jackson dressed up as a woman does not prove anything. As well as the extensive use of words like "claims, alleged, allegations, sources" say nothing. I hope that what' s his name will suffocate from the lies he wrote.

This is not something I really want to know about. It's his private life and his personal business who he had affairs with. I just don't think that MJ was really quite himself in later years, with his addictions and mental health problems. He was once so looked up to and respected though (I remember it well), he gave so much joy and so much of himself. That's the person I'd like to remember now. I think we all know the main problem was that he was sadly surrounded by a lot of people who treated him as 'superstar', but never really got him the help that he really needed for his illnesses and problems. He may not now get formal honours, but I'm confident his work and tremendous impact will still be remembered for a long time to come. R.I.P. Michael

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An Iranian passenger plane crashed Wednesday in northwest Iran, killing all 168 people on board, state media reported.

Footage from the scene on state-run Press TV showed a deep trench smashed into an agricultural field by the impact, littered with smoking wreckage. It showed a large chunk of a wing, but much of the wreckage appeared to be in small pieces.

The Russian-made Caspian Airlines jet was heading from Tehran to the Armenian capital Yerevan when it crashed near the village of Jannatabad outside the city of Qazvin, around 75 miles northwest of Tehran, state television said.

The Qazvin emergency services director Hossein Bahzadpour told the IRNA news agency that the plane was completely destroyed and shattered to pieces, and the wreckage was in flames. "It his highly likely that all the passengers on the flight were killed," Bahzadpour said.

He did not give a number, but Iranian Civil Aviation Organization spokesman Reza Jafarzadeh told state television that 153 passengers and 15 crewmembers were on board. State TV said all were killed.

A Caspian Airlines representative told AP in Yerevan that most of the passengers were Armenians, and that some Georgian citizen and other nationalities were on board. The representative spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to talk to the press.

Caspian Airlines is a Russian-Iranian joint venture founded in 1993. Iran has frequent plane crashes often because of bad maintenance of its aging aircraft. Tehran blames the problem in part on U.S. sanctions that prevent Iran from getting spare parts for some planes. Caspian Airlines, however, uses Russian-made Tupolevs whose maintenance would be less impaired by American sanctions.

In February 2006, a Russian-made TU-154 operated by Iran Airtour, which is affiliated with Iran's national carrier, crashed during landing in Tehran, killing 29 of the 148 people on board. Another Airtour Tupolev crashed in 2002 in the mountains of western Iran, killing all 199 on board.

The crashes have also affected Iran's military. In December 2005, 115 people were killed when a U.S.-made C-130 plane, crashed into a 10-story building near Tehran's Mehrabad airport. In Nov. 2007, a Russian-made Iranian military plane crashed shortly after takeoff killing 36 members of the elite Revolutionary Guards.

Google shuts office in India over swine flu fears

HYDERABAD, India (AP) — Google Inc. shut one of its offices in southern India for two days after an employee tested positive for swine flu, a company statement said Wednesday.

The office in Hyderabad with 250 workers was closed on Tuesday and Wednesday while it was being sanitized, the statement said. However, the main office in the city, a key software hub in the country, was functioning normally.

"One of our contractual workers in Hyderabad has been diagnosed with the virus. He has been hospitalized and is under full medical care," the statement said.

"As a precautionary measure we have closed the concerned office for two days," it said.

K. Subhakar, the coordinator of state-run Swine Flu Nodal Center, said the Google worker also infected six other people, most of them sharing accommodation with him. No details of the six people were immediately available.

All seven patients have been quarantined in the Government Chest Hospital for treatment, he said.

Subhakar said 95 workers at the facility have been screened for the virus and four of them have been asked to stay in hospital as their samples were being tested.

He also said the Google employee had recently returned from the United States but did not show any symptoms when he was screened at the airport.

In India, 220 people have so far tested positive for swine flu, according to the Health Ministry. Of them, 141 have been sent home after treatment.

No deaths have been reported so far in India.

Sharm-el-Sheikh: Indian foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and his Pakistani counterpart, Salman Bashir, met here late night on Tuesday as part of renewed efforts by the two countries to restart the dialogue process and address the recurring problem of terrorists using Pakistani territory to launch attacks across the border in India.

Briefing reporters shortly after midnight, Indian officials said the talks, which lasted 90 minutes, involved a detailed and lengthy discussion on the issues that the two top foreign office diplomats had been tasked by their leaders to take up. The foreign secretaries agreed to meet again on Wednesday, the sources said, adding that there was a possibilitythat Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Yousaf Raza Gilani would "meet" the press together after their meeting on July 16.

The Indian sources refused to elaborate but the very fact that Indian and Pakistani officials are working towards the two Prime Ministers jointlymeeting or addressing the media means both sides have resolved to move the process forward, presumably by issuing a joint statement spelling out a common agenda.

The last joint India-Pakistan statement was in New York on September 24, 2008, when Mr. Singh met Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari.

Among the decisions announced then was the convening of a special meeting of the Joint Anti-Terror Mechanism (JATM) to "address mutual concerns including the bombing of the Indian Embassy in Kabul" and the commencement of cross-LoC trade on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakot roads. Cros-LoC trade began and has been a success but the JATM, which met onOctober 24, accomplished nothing of consequence.

Following the terrorist attacks on Mumbai on November 26-29, India suspended the composite dialogue pening action by Pakistan against the Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives and others who had hatched the conspiracy on Pakistani soil.

On June 17, 2009, Mr. Singh and Mr. Zardari met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Yekaterinburg and agreed to ask their foreign secretaries to discuss what Pakistan had done and could do to address India's concerns relating to terrorism. The two foreign secretaries would then report back to their leaders, who would meet subsequently at Sharm-el-Sheikh on the sidelines of the Nonaligned Movement summit in this Egyptian resort on the Red Sea.

Mr. Menon arrived here on Tuesday night from Paris along with Mr. Singh and almost immediately went into a meeting with Mr. Bashir at the Savoy Hotel. The two men met one-on-one, without aides, the sources said.

	Dingo Australia does not have any native dogs of their own, but the dingo was brought there thousands of years ago. Dingos cannot bark, they have extra-large paws and their ears are always upright. Ranches in Australia had a hard time farming because dingos attacked their animals. The farming area of southeastern Australia has a dingo-proof fence more than 3,000 miles long.
